5th Grade G/T Math
Fifth grade G/T Math students engaged in the new Common Core Standards all year. They were real troopers, working through meaningful and challenging mathematical tasks, learning real world content in order to extract and apply advanced mathematical concepts and skills. It has been a rigorous and rewarding mathematical year!
Telecommunications Backdrop:
With the recent privatization of space, we used the Space X topic as a springboard for our Ratio/Proportion unit. Using ratios, percents and proportions, we each designed a backdrop for a space telecommunications center.

Problem-Solving:
Something we do a lot of is PROBLEM-SOLVING! So it was best to start out the year thinking about some steps to take while working through an problem-solving process.

Scale Space Shuttle Models:
Since we were still on the topic of space and ratio/proportion, we decided to make scale models of the recently retired Space Shuttle.

Time for Holiday Shopping!
Next, we were into the Integer unit. In order to understand the concepts of negative and positive values, we all got to "go shopping" for holiday gifts. We kept a checkbook register to keep track of our balances, even though we occasionally went in the red!

We presented our chosen gifts and our holiday checkbook activity and balances on self-made posters.
Computing with Integers:
Once we knew what it meant to be "in the black" and "in the red," it was time to actually compute using integers. Beans and pennies were used to represent negative and positive amounts.

Incomes vs. Withdrawals:
In order to review for integer concepts based upon a household budget, we worked in groups to create games that would involved keeping a checkbook register. During the course of each game, we had to keep an accurate balance, whether it was positive or negative.

Making the games was just as fun as playing them!
Happy Pi Day!
To understand the relationship between both area and circumference of a circle, as well as the area of a parallelogram and the area of a circle, all it took was a little fruit - and loads of fun! P.S. Red velvet cookies were dessert!
