Ancient Civilizations - 4th grade c.e.u.
This unit is interdisciplinary in nature and uses advanced-level reading and writing instruction to explore the elements that make for a successful civilization.
DROUGHT!
Working in groups, we were faced with a variety of challenging scenarios to discuss. The idea was to brainstorm ideas for survival as a group. Eventually we understood the transformation from survival to a thriving civilization.

Exploring Ancient Civilizations:
In order to better understand the eight main elements of a civilization, we explored a variety of books in search of specific elements.

Critical Thinking Questions:
Once we had an understanding of the elements of a civilization, we worked to come up with critical thinking questions related to the elements of a successful civilization. We exchanged our questions with other groups, so we could finish our digital C.T.Q. maps. Thinking critically is not an easy task, but we can handle it!

A Hierarchy of Needs:
Based upon what we had learned that civilizations needed to thrive, we discussed and agreed upon a hierarchy of needs. First we worked from left to right on a strip to rank the needs how we individually felt they should be ordered.

Icons in a Pyramid:
We represented the hierarchy of needs in the artistic form of a cut out pyramid with icons to represent each need. The discussion to justify our placement of these needs was very stimulating!

Our Element Artifacts:
We each picked a civilization of our choice and researched the civilization based on one specific element. We then used our talents to re-create the artifact and compose a plaque to explain the connection of the artifact with our civilization's particular element.
