5th Grade GT Math - Native Gardening
Why Plant Natives?
To start the Expressions and Equations unit, we first had an introduction to the importance of native plants in creating greater biodiversity.

Reading & Math - Hand in Hand
Math is not just numbers and symbols. In order to understand our purpose, we have to be able to read critically. Our topic? Native plants, of course!

Go, Eco Club!
Our first unit task was to figure out the cost of custom-printed t-shirts for a fifth grade Eco Club. We used algebraic expressions to solve the problems of the task.

Here are our awesome shirts!
Factoring Expressions:
When it comes to writing and factoring expressions, using tiles to represent the GCF allowed us to understand the concept in order to apply it to the math task.

Tackling Mathematical Tasks - First....Questions!
In order to really understand the task at hand, first we have to read it and have some in-depth discussion about it. The best strategy we learned is to first ask questions so we can understand the best way to tackle the task. Listen to what we wondered when diving into one of our math tasks.

Algebra and nature mix perfectly on a gorgeous day like this one!!
Testing Expressions to Fit the Task:
Once we understand the task, it's time to apply the math concepts and work them out together sometimes to be sure we are on the right track. Here, we are testing two different ways to write an expression to solve a problem. We found that only one of them would worked correctly.
