Green Ambassadors - 5th Grade
instructional seminar
The fifth grade Green Ambassadors' mission is to help the student body and staff of Atholton maintain their "green-ness." They do this by meeting with their assigned classes throughout the school to teach the students about environmental initiatives the school will undertake. They also teach the students they represent things they can do to keep their carbon footprint as low as possible. We meet once a week during recess all year.
Preparing to Communicate with A.E.S. Staff
In order to represent our assigned classes, Green Ambassadors must keep a written Communication Log with each of our assigned grade-level teams to set appointments in order to make presentations. We started out this year by designing interesting front and back covers for our Communication Logs. This was a great team-building activity.

Glue Collection Boxes:
We send empty glue sticks to Terracycle, where they will be upcycled to make new products. Each class has a collection box. When we presented the boxes to the classrooms, we explained how to empty the glue stick before placing it in the box. We keep track of our glue sticks, and so far we have over 1,000!

Communicating with Teachers:
We have to keep clear communication with the teachers we represent so we can make a keep appointments to present to their classes. We have learned how important it is to be clear with our requests and responses.

Time to Present:
Our main purpose is to get the message of GREEN out to the entire student body. We do this through multiple presentations we make throughout the school year. We learned the importance of presentation skills.

Our Weekly Practices:
There are some jobs we keep regularly, in addition to presenting initiatives as they arise. We collect our classes' empty glue sticks and keep track of our counts and how much money will will collect for them at 2 cents a stick. We have to sign a presentation log each time we intend to present to a class, stating that we have gotten permission to miss class during the presentation time. We also regularly collect our classes' dried out writing utensils, because we send them to Terracycle along with the glue sticks.

Some of Our Initiatives:
Each time we present to a class, we have a set topic to introduce. A few examples of these topics are: The annual AES Greenwear sale, the use of our new classroom set of binoculars (Jensen even made a bino diagram we copied and laminated to keep with the binoculars), Athtolton's electronic Green School portfolio we had just submitted for re-certification, and our textile collection we took on this spring. Sometimes we write skits to perform during morning announcements to keep everyone informed at once.

New Binoculars for AES:
Since we had a new set of binoculars to share with the school, it was our job to learn how to use them, along with the names of all the parts, and then we took our classes outside to teach them how to use the binoculars.

20-Minute Clean Up Day in Howard County:
Of course we had to play a part in the county-wide clean-up day in Howard County! On April 18th, we walked the grounds of AES and picked up trash. It was a real eye-opener!

Thank You Cards for Every Student:
In late April, we found out we had successfully become re-certified as a Maryland Green School. Since this is a school and community-wide effort, we wrote small thank you cards for each student's Friday folder so their families know we are thankful for their efforts in helping us maintain our Green School status.
