How Can We Hypothesize?
To start this unit, we watched Miss Frizzle help her students make a hypothesis based on the combination of artifacts, logic, and research. In this way, Miss Frizzle's students were able to present the real story behind an ancient artifact.

OUR Turn to Hyphothesize:
We examined artifacts from life in the past and tried to come up with what they were, who once used them - and for what reason.

What if My Belongings Were Artifacts?
In 400 years, our things will be artifacts. We practiced looking at the objects on our dressers and figuring out what people from the future would hypothesize about US!

Analyzing the Contents of a Trashcan:
We learned that by digging up the contents of what was once James Madison's "midden," or trash, archaeologists were able to learn a lot about his life. Then it was our turn to examine the items in a "trashcan" and come up with stories as well. In small groups, we decided in just which layer each item would go, and based upon our chosen placement of the items, we wrote stories about the owner of the trashcan.

Here are some of our stories:
Stratigraphy:
While composing stories about the imaginary owner of the "trashcan," we learned about stratigraphy, the study of the placement of artifacts in specific layers of the earth. Then we went home and did some research on someone to display the layers of that person's life through our amazing projects!
